Job - Christian Education Coordinator

Central UMC, a Reconciling congregation of the United Methodist Church, currently living as two expressions--a traditional century-church and a newly-developing church-within-a-church--seeks an energetic Director of Christian Education to lead our faith formation programs. Christian Education and Faith Formation plays a key role in the mission of Central. It is our goal to provide and promote a wide range of Christian Education and faith formation opportunities for the Church community. The Director will report directly to the pastor but work in coordination with the Education Council and Director or Mission and Engagement. We are looking for someone to bring new energy and ideas to our programs, including:

  • A fun, safe environment for infants-4 years
  • Creative, dynamic, age-appropriate Sunday school activities for grades pre-K-5
  • Meaningful youth programs, including fellowship, worship, and service opportunities, for grades 6-12
  • Confirmation classes
  • Adult study groups and programs
  • Special events and ministries


  • Working with appropriate church leaders to set goals, determine priorities, establish programs, and coordinate calendar.
  • Overseeing that all areas of Children and Youth Ministry are implemented, including: curriculum, programs, and music.
  • Coordinate Sunday school curriculum in conjunction with the Education council that exemplify Central’s ministry and mission
  • Keep current with the latest trends, methods, and materials for religious education
  • Coordinate the purchase of educational supplies within approved budget.
  • Recruit teachers and assistants for Sunday school
  • Providing leadership to the educational ministry of the church from nursery to adult, including identifying gifts of leaders and promoting their involvement in Sunday School and Youth activities.
  • Work cooperatively with the pastor on Children’s Messages and confirmation class instruction
  • Work with the Director of Media Engagement to promote, advertise, and celebrate the Christian Education offered at CUMC
  • Coordinate with various committees (Worship, Mission, Fellowship) to increase participation of youth in all areas of church life.
  • Empower parents to be involved with the faith development of their children.
  • Ensure compliance with Safe Sanctuary policies
  • Improve and learn new skills through ongoing training opportunities
  • Attend regularly scheduled Staff meetings, church council meetings, and education council meetings
  • Write and submit regular reports as needed
  • Other duties and activities as required, including special programs

  • Willingness and ability to comply with and support all policies, procedures, standards, and statements outlined in the Employee Handbook and other governing documents of Central United Methodist Church
  • The ability to be highly effective in a team-oriented environment and to build relationships based on added value, not title or authority is crucial
  • Excellent Interpersonal, verbal, and written communications and administrative abilities, including active listening
  • Ability to use all Microsoft office software, including: Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
  • Excellent Problem solving and analytical skills
  • Ability to interact well with all generational levels
  • Ability to sit, stand, stoop and lift objects up to 30 pounds.
  • A calling to Christian education
  • Demonstrate leadership and organizational skills.
  • This person should have a caring and nurturing personality combined with a belief in the mission of CUMC and a belief in the saving grace of Jesus Christ.
  • Be able to effectively communicate and have a connection with youth that will engage and motivate them.
  • Bachelor’s degree and education experience required. Experience in Christian education leadership roles and/or seminary training preferred.
  • Hours for in-office, evening and weekend responsibilities to be determined in consultation with the pastor and the SPRC. Hours will be published/posted.
  • Monitor weekly Sunday school attendance. Follow-up with absentees.
  • Prepare annual educational program budget with the education council.
  • Supply a monthly report to Church Council
  • Background check with no red flags must be completed prior to interview
  • Must complete CUMC’s required Safe Sanctuary training.



  • The Pastor serves as head of all staff.
  • The Staff/Parish Relations Committee is available for any personnel related matters.
  • The Education Council develops overall policy for the education program and works cooperatively with the director in development and implementation of the program.



Position details: Part-time, salaried.  Average 10 hours per week/48 weeks August through June,  including Sunday mornings 8:30 AM-12 noon from early September-mid June. Salary commensurate with education and experience.
